A Visitor from Japan

The Japanese department got off to an exciting start this year with the arrival of Koji, a student teacher from Nagoya University in Japan. We welcomed Koji through Griffith University’s International Studies program. Koji has spent four weeks with us, during which time he engaged with our students in a range of authentic Australian activities, including Year 7 Camp, eating lots of Aussie meals and taking part in conversations! Koji was part of all our Japanese language classes and students really gained a valuable insight into Japanese language and culture by listening to his stories and chatting with him during their classes.

Our Year 7 students have been especially impressive, as they have successfully learned the first alphabet of Japanese, Hiragana this term. We are extremely proud of their hard work and dedication to mastering a new writing system. We are thrilled that our Year 10 students have also made significant progress in their Japanese studies. They have successfully learned the second alphabet, Katakana this term. We commend their diligence and perseverance in achieving this milestone.

Koji’s presence at Ambrose has been an incredible opportunity for our students to engage with a native Japanese speaker and gain a deeper understanding of Japanese culture. Our students thoroughly enjoyed conversing with Koji, asking him questions, playing soccer, and exploring the great outdoors during Camp Week. To wrap up Koji's immersion here, Tasha Damon and her Year 10 students had a chance to make some delicious rice balls, known as ‘onigiri’ with Koji. As the group learnt new cooking skills and shared a meal together, it reflected the welcoming and diverse community that makes up ATC and we look forward to welcoming more of our Japanese friends back to the College in the future.

I look forward to continuing to support our Japanese students on their learning journeys in Term Two.

みなさん、おつかれさまでした!
