Student supports PNG remote communities with a Bake Sale fundraiser

Tynan Abeyewardene a Year 11 student at Ambrose Treacy College Indooroopilly, has successfully raised $2,000 through a school bake sale to purchase essential equipment for the local churches in the villages of Rabagi, Ralokor, Tamanairik, and ToBarip in Papua New Guinea.

The equipment, four sets of brush cutters and pole saws, will assist with the ongoing maintenance of church grounds; central hubs for gathering, worship, and community support in these remote regions. Additionally, any income generated from hiring out the equipment will be reinvested into the villages to provide essential resources and support to those in need.

Tynan travelled to Papua New Guinea during the September break with his extended family to attend a celebration for his uncle and former staff member Nicholls Manikot in the village of Rabagi. After hearing about the challenging realities faced by these communities – including clearing land by hand and living without access to electricity or running water – Tynan collaborated with community members through family contacts to identify resources needed to support the villages in a meaningful and sustainable way.

During the celebration, Tynan witnessed the strength and spirit of the community firsthand. It is estimated that over 1,000 people attended the event—many walking up to two and a half hours, some with children and carrying handmade traditional dance attire, to be part of the festivities.

Tynan and his family captured these photos of the vibrant cultural dancing, the joy of community connection, and the special moments spent engaging with village children. This experience has left a lasting impression and deepened appreciation for the power of community and shared humanity.
