Data - One Part of Achieving Your Personal Best

"Do your personal best and forget about the rest."

— Meg Ellis, Assistant Dean of Learning Middle School

As the NAPLAN test period begins, it is crucial to understand the purpose. The NAPLAN tests serve as a benchmark for students' academic performance around Australia and help identify areas where additional support may be needed. These standardised tests are designed to assess students' literacy and numeracy skills, providing valuable insights into academic progress. We must remember though, that they are only one form of data that schools collect. At ATC we value our student’s learning beyond testing. We encourage our students to strive to achieve their personal best in the classroom, on stage, on the sporting field and as people in society.

So how can we help our students achieve their best in NAPLAN?

There are a few tips we can impart to our young people:

  1. Remember to have a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy breakfast.
  2. Make sure they come prepared with a charged computer, cabled headphones and a pencil.
  3. Know what test they have and when, what room they will be in and be on time.
  4. Read the instructions on the test. Know what is being asked of them.
  5. Use all the tools on the platform- Read aloud, rulers, calculators etc.
  6. Use the time wisely, reread their work and only submit the test when asked to do so.

What does NAPLAN look like?

If students are nervous about the testing and want to practice more, there is always the Public demonstration site they can visit. It allows students to explore the tools further NAP - Public demonstration site. At school, students have practised using the general test- the Omnibus test as well as completing a writing practice on the NAPLAN platform. We hope that this helps them feel confident to do their best on the day.

Keep Positive and Offer Encouragement

During the test period we can help encourage students to recognize their own excellence beyond standardized testing, so please let’s remind them about the purpose of the tests. Remind them to stay positive, and confident and encourage them to believe in their own abilities and focus on their strengths rather than dwelling on their weaknesses. Parents can play a vital role during this time by reminding the students that personal growth and development are equally important. Within the ATC community, we believe success goes beyond test scores. Recognizing achievements in areas such as leadership, community service, or creative pursuits can help with this.

Remember, every child is unique, with their own set of talents and abilities. Let's encourage our young people to strive for their own excellence in NAPLAN and in all facets of life.
