Coming Up Week 9

Father & Son Night

Our Year 7 Father and Son Night was a special evening celebrating the important role of fathers and father figures in our Year 7 students’ lives.

We know that families come in all shapes and sizes, and it was wonderful to see students joined by dads, stepfathers, grandfathers, uncles, and older brothers — all sharing in the spirit of connection.

The night began with a sausage sizzle, followed by trivia fun and reflective conversations about the significance of these relationships and the impactful role of father figures in our student’s lives. More than just an event, it was an opportunity to create lasting memories together. The laughter, stories and good fun will hopefully be part of wonderful Father’s Day celebrations in the coming days.

We are also mindful of all those who cannot be with their Father’s this weekend and pray that positive and happy thoughts and memories are at the forefront of their minds.

Over the next two weeks our Pillar of Learning should be the focus for each student. Planning for assessment and examinations is characterized by a consistent approach each day rather than a flurry of ‘just in time’ study.

‘Not everything counts, but everything matters’ Ivan Cleary

There are several ways to study, and many students have excellent routines whilst others need help. If your son isn’t a self-starter or you struggle to know how to help as a parent, here are a couple of ideas.

  • The 30-minute plan: Each day students have 6 lessons. As soon as your son arrives home, complete 30 minutes of study. Write down the 6 subjects and spend just 5 minutes on each. Ask simple focus questions as he goes through each subject.

- What key ideas came out today’s lesson?

- List the homework that has been set.

- Is there something I’m unsure about that I need to revise?

  • The Pomodoro Technique: Use the scaffold the 30-minute plan has provided to deepen learning. It’s all about focusing time on each task. Remove distractions and focus on the subject or task for 25 minutes. Take a 5-minute break and then go again with the next subject. Pomodoro® Technique - Time Management Method

These approaches frame the day, generate a learning discussion with your son, and provide structure to the evening’s study plan. ATC also partners with Elevate Education who lead study skills sessions with students. Check out their website for more tips about effective studying. Home | Elevate Education

Funky Sock Donations for Year 12s

Each year, our Year 4s offer moral support to the Year 12s as they enter their final External Exam period. It’s become a tradition that Year 4s give a pair of funky socks to a Year 12 student and write an inspirational message to them. We ask that if you are able to donate one or two pairs of colourful, funky socks, please send them to your son's homeroom teacher by the Friday 10 October. This is entirely voluntary and you are not obligated to donate. Boys will write an inspirational message in their classrooms.

SERVICE

Service Opportunity – STEPtember

ATC students across all ages are invited to take part in STEPtember; an initiative that raises funds to “make life-changing impacts for those living with cerebral palsy”. This is a fantastic way of supporting others and getting your daily dose of physical activity. Students who successfully complete STEPtember will be able to log 8 service hours.

During September, you will track 10,000 steps a day, your way. You can convert more than 40 activities into steps including swimming, cycling, or riding your bike.

Step up for these benefits:

Get a month-long boost. Move your body to improve your health, lower your stress or kickstart your fitness routine.

Raise funds. Every dollar you raise supports the early detection and therapy for babies with cerebral palsy.

Ready to step up? sign up here: https://www.steptember.org.au/join-ambrosetreacycollege.

Stay tuned for more details. Until then, get ready to step up for a month of feel-good fitness.

*Service Hours may be logged prior to the completion of STEPtember so that hours can be attributed to 2025 totals.

FAQ’s

How do I count my steps?

Outside of school mobile phones will have apps that can keep track for you. During school, an estimation of your steps will be sufficient.

Does my swimming/running/cycling/yoga/vacuuming count as steps?

Yes! On the STEPtember website you will find a conversion chart for many of the day-to-day activities that you already do. You may find that you already do 10,000+ every day!

How much money do I need to raise?

Fundraising amounts will not be monitored and so students are free to fundraise as much or as little as they are able to.

How do I fundraise?

That is entirely up to you. The website has some great ideas, but please note any fundraising must be done outside of the school. Fundraising is not required to participate in this challenge for awareness.

Last Chance to Log Service Hours for 2025

The cut-off date for students to log their service hours for 2025 is Thursday, 19 September. Any hours recorded after this date will be carried forward and count towards the 2026 totals.

To have service hours formally recognised, students should either:

  • Speak with their Homeroom Teacher about the service they have completed, and/or
  • Send an email with details of their service to their Homeroom teacher requesting these hours to be logged.

We encourage all ATC students to take the time to record their hours before the deadline. By doing so, they not only ensure their efforts are celebrated but also add to the strong tradition of service that lies at the heart of Ambrose Treacy College. Together, through Service, Learning and Leadership, we continue to live out the Edmund Rice vision of making a difference in the lives of others.

At Ambrose Treacy College, we proudly stand on three core pillars — Service, Learning and Leadership — which shape the way our young people grow, lead and contribute to the world around them. Inspired by the Edmund Rice ethos, service is more than just volunteering; it is an opportunity to live out the values of compassion, justice and generosity, and to place the needs of others before our own.

Service at ATC takes many forms. Whether it is supporting College initiatives, lending a hand to community projects, fundraising for important causes, or quietly helping those in need, every act of service reflects the spirit of giving that defines our community. Each year, it is inspiring to see how students embrace this call and make a genuine difference both within and beyond the College gates.

To ensure that this commitment is recognised, students’ contributions will be acknowledged at the End of Year Service Assembly and celebrated at our annual Night of Excellence. These occasions allow us to highlight not only the number of hours completed but, more importantly, the impact those actions have had on others.
