Premier’s Reading Challenge
The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) commenced on Monday for all our junior students and some of our middle school students. Students are now challenged over the next 3 months to read either 15 or 20 books, depending on their Year level. The aim is to read a variety of different texts over this time to reach their goal. It would be wonderful for parents to support this at home by encouraging their sons to read and also for junior students, signing off when the boys have completed a book.
National Simultaneous Storytime
Wednesday 25 May at 11am some of our junior school classes took part in the National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS). NSS is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, child care centres, book shops and many other places around the country. Last year over 500 000 children at 3100 locations across Australia took part. This year some of our classes viewed a video recording of the book. The chosen book this year is I Got This Hat by Jol and Kate Temple. If you would like to watch this video or play it to any younger children at home, click here and scroll down to find the video, recorded by Anne Edmonds.
This term we are commencing book club with Scholastic. Catalogues will go home on Tuesday and all orders must be placed by Sunday 5th June. Today at morning tea a small number of boys were invited to be part of our Reader’s Café. These boys were provided with morning tea and had the whole junior school library to themselves. During this time they were given limited building materials and challenged to build a catapult. The boys had great fun and were very appreciative of being part of this event.
