Community News for Week 5

Another successful Book Club occurred last Monday night . We were very lucky to have author, Cass Moriarty attend our Club and we enjoyed much discussion, laughter and banter, and we even made suggestions of how to end her next book. There’s talk of ‘The Promise Seed’ going to film!…. so watch this space. If you’d like to join in the reading our next book is ‘The Soldier’s Curse’ by Meg & Tom Keneally and we will meet on Monday 5 June at 7:30pm – see details below.

Volunteers Needed for ATC House Lunch – Friday 26 May
Looking for a great way to get involved with the school community? We NEED volunteers for the Term 2 House Lunch to be held in second break on Friday 26 May. Please volunteer by clicking here. We are also looking for a Coordinator to look after future House Lunches. This would involve liaising with the school and arranging volunteers. Please consider this worthwhile role and email Sam LeBlang on if you are interested. Please note that the Tuckshop will be closed for 2nd break that day and student’s are to wear usual Friday uniform. Each student will receive 2 sausages and gluten free sausages will be available.

Year 5 Families Walk for Charity
Would you like to connect with some new Year 5 families while earning two valuable service hours and contributing to a wonderful cause? Join us on Sunday 28 May for the Alzheimers Australia Memory Walk & Jog. We will meet at UQ around 8:00am for a 9:05am start to the 5 Km Walk. Cost to register for the 5km Walk for a family of four is $55. There are more options and registration details are available by clicking here. Book Club

Parent Evening Out
Middle and Senior School Parents are invited to the Kenmore Tavern’s Courtyard Bar for a casual catch up with friends, to swap notes on teenagers and meet other parents in the school community. You can order meals and drinks from the bar and there is a full bistro menu. We would love to see you there. The evening starts at 7pm. AFL Boys’ Day Out AFL
The Annual Boys’ Day Out for AFL LIONS vs WESTERN BULLDOGS match is on Saturday 5 August. This is an event for all family members (dads, mums, sons, daughters and grandparents). We will meet at 3pm for pizza & drinks and then proceed as a group into the stadium for the match. Full package includes pizza & drinks, commemorative ATC cap and ticket with prices ranging from $120 for a Family ticket (2 adults, 2 Juniors) to $25 for a Junior ticket (6-14 y/o). If your son comes to the tuckshop without his card, he will be sent to Student Services to get permission for a purchase without a card. Students will only be given a $2.00 scroll for each break if they forget to bring lunch.

Microwave use for Middle & Senior School
There is now a microwave available for Years 7, 8 9 and 10 students to heat up their meals at the breaks. In order to use the microwave, parents and students will need to read the safety and maintenance rules, and sign the permission form available to download via the link below.

Parent Evening with Dr Ian Hunter
Research has shown that proficiency in writing is critical to student outcomes and opportunities. Parents play an important role both in modelling literacies, as well as in partnering with teachers, in having learning conversations with students. ATC invites parents to attend an evening with Dr Ian Hunter, as part of an ongoing commitment to improving outcomes for boys. Go to Flexischools to book your seat. Montessori Picnic
On Sunday 4 June our near neighbours, Indooroopilly Montessori will hold their Annual Picnic in the Park on Jack Bowers Oval. Ambrose Treacy College is a major sponsor of the day and our ATC Jazz Band, Big Band, Handbells and Magicians will be entertaining the crowds. We look foward to seeing you at our tent on the day. There are rides, food stalls, games and loads of entertainment.

Flu Season
The Queensland Department of Health has issued a request to disseminate information to schools so that staff and parents/guardians are informed, prepared and proactive as we enter the influenza season. Please follow the link below to download the information flyer.

St Joseph’s Primary School Corinda are celebrating their Centenary this year. They are holding a Celebration Day on Saturday 27 May and are inviting all past and present students and families to mark the occasion. Please download the link below to their information flyer.

Get Caught Reading
This month the Library has launch the Get Caught Reading initiative in the Middle School. You can take a photo of your son reading and share it with the Library. Photos will be displayed in at Westcourt and entries go into the draw to win goody bags. Send your photos to Westcourt Library

Parent Support Group
West Brisbane Region Asperger Support meeting is on Thursday May 25 from 7pm – 9pm at St Matthew’s Church Hall (cnr. Oxley and Sherwood Rds. Sherwood) The guest speaker is Ms Penny Hayes a Bodymind Therapist and Feldenkrais Practitioner who will speak on ‘Relaxation Techniques 101’. Children are welcome to attend with their parents. the cost is $5 per person. Any queries please email Jane Leonforte.
