Coming Up Last Week of Term

Thursday was an emotional day across the College as we farewelled the 2020 Seniors. The Valedictory Assembly in SFXC was attended by the Years 9-11 students, with the Year 12 parents watching a live-feed in NJ Hall and the Years 4-8 homerooms watching the live feed in their homerooms. The handing over of the symbols representing the College’s three pillars – Learning, Leadership and Service, from the Seniors of 2020 to the Seniors of 2021 was symbolic, impactful and filled with high energy.

The student body then formed a farewell tunnel to congratulate and applaud the 2020 Seniors as they made their way to the Edmund Rice roundabout where their parents had gathered to see their final farewell from the ATC campus. The change in Queensland Heath restrictions which allowed our parents to be present for the last rituals was a real blessing. The families then moved to Riverlife for the Valedictory Mass and Graduation ceremony.

One special moment for me at the Valedictory ceremony was the realisation that for some of our Seniors, it was not the conclusion of a six, or even nine year journey. The year 12s at one stage gathered in small groups for photos. These were the men who began their journey together 13 years ago, at places like OLR, CTK, Holy Family. What a special time when they have spent the last 13 years of their young life together. These are very special memories for the Seniors, and for their parents who have travelled the education path together.

I've had the pleasure of announcing the graduation of both father and son!

It is days such as this which act as a strong reminder that we are in a wonderful profession, and a day that reinforces the notion that we do make a real difference. The graduating class are a superb group of young men who will always look good, feel good and do good in the wider community. But the most pleasing and rewarding aspect I noticed is the growth they have undertaken, individually and as a cohort, from their Middle School days. This is due in part to the guidance and support from staff but equally from the love and encouragement they have received from their parents and caregivers all of us working together as a team. I thank our graduating 2020 Seniors for all that they have contributed to the ATCommunity and wish them all the very best as they transition into this next phase of their exciting lives. We look forward to welcoming our second group of Old Boys back to the College very soon!

Read All About It

Making headlines, the leader of our 2020 graduates has had a leader who has remained positive, focused and energised despite the hurdles placed in his way. Quest News have published a lovely story by Tom Perissinotto and his reflection on the 2020 school year. “After all the disappointments of a COVID Year 12, I believe there was still plenty to be thankful for. While COVID-19 has had a significant impact on our year, part of my mindset was to avoid making a big deal of it.” CLICK HERE to read his story with your Courier Mail login.

LEARNING

Year 4 Raft Regatta

The Year 4 Regatta is an annual event where the students build rafts using recycled milk bottles. This year it is being held on Thursday 26 November. We ask the boys to bring their saved milk bottles in on Monday 23 November together with packing tape. Over the week, the boys will be making their rafts in groups. Each group will be making a raft with an approximate capacity of 150L. On the day of the race, Thursday 26 November the boys are to wear sports uniform this day and bring Swimming togs or boardies, sun-shirt and a towel. As the races are at the beginning of the day, they can wear boardshorts to school and change into ATC sports shorts after the races if that suits. It promises to be a fantastic day. Please note this is a student only event.

FORMATION

Captain’s blog

As College Captain and leader of our 2020 Year 12 cohort, Tom has had a year filled with unique challenges and during these unprecedented times, he and his classmates have held dear the ATC brotherhood. In today’s blog he talks of his respect for his mentors and admiration for the courageous way his peers have faced the challenges of 2020. With the wisdom of someone twice his age, Tom shares with us the six key lessons he has learnt as College Captain. Farewell Tom and thank you for your inspirational leadership and unbridled enthusiasm for life! CLICK HERE TO READ.

Year 4 Secret Santa

Each Year 4 student is invited to participate. To be part of the Secret Santa boys must bring in a $5 gift to participate in a class “Secret Santa”. The boys won’t receive the name of another boy to buy for, rather it will be a “lucky dip” with numbers attached to each gift. We encourage the boys to buy something that they would appreciate receiving themselves. The Secret Santa is an optional activity and only the boys who bring in gifts will be able to participate. If your son wishes to participate then please ensure your son’s gift is wrapped and sent to school by Wednesday 25 November. The boys will open the presents on the last day of school, Friday 27 November.

House Challenge

It’s 10 months of competition, grit, determination and then waiting for the announcement! Who is the Champion House for 2020? Our innovative teachers have found unique ways for boys to connect this year, to come together as a group, share our culture of belonging and be part of a team.

The Pièce de résistance was the Tug of War challenge, redesigned to be bigger and better, with more energy and spirit. Our student leaders with the Heads of House rallied ATC Boys, and motivated them with tales of legendary Irish warriors. War cries echoed from Waterford to Brothers Oval and the battle lines were drawn. On days like this it is obvious that every student belongs; and already we are championing Charlie, Owen and Reilly’s vision for 2021. And the champs of House Challenge for 2020 are….. joint winners, Leinster and Munster Houses! Well done Mr Brown and Mr Towner! Equal 3rd place were Connacht and Ulster Houses.

Driving Guidelines

The College has a legal responsibility to take all reasonable measures to ensure the welfare and safety of both staff and students. While most young drivers are careful, safety conscious and considerate when driving they are one of the most vulnerable road user groups. Travelling with teenage passengers adds to the risk for these young drivers. This has been an ongoing concern for the College particularly when students are driving to and from Ambrose Treacy College. Please see the College App for the important document with further information regarding driving guidelines for students.

Junior School End of Year Celebrations

Our usual end of year celebration liturgies for Year 4 and 5 will not take place this year due to restrictions. In place of the normal celebrations, the Year 4 and 5 boys will come together in the afternoon of Thursday 26 November to celebrate with the Year 6 students their transition to Middle School and to mark the end of another amazing school year. Year 6 students will celebrate this occasion with the College Transition program in three components:

Year 6 Transition Retreat (Periods 1-4, Thursday 26 November)
End of Year 6 Celebration Liturgy (Thursday 26 November at 1:30pm)
Rite of Passage Tunnel (Friday 27 November – Time to be announced)

Full details of these events are on the College App in the Year 6 tag. Please read Michael Stewart’s letter for further details.
