Coming Up in Week 7 Term 3

As week 6 comes to a close, we can reflect on the impact and benefits of a varied cocurricular program and all it offers students at ATC. Over the weekend, our Performing Arts students represented the school with professionalism and competency at QCMF while others played their hearts out on the football fields, in the pool and on the courts. There are many opportunities for your sons to be actively involved in College life in Term 3 and I hope they are encouraged to participate in some of the events outlined below.

Queensland Catholic Music Festival
With over 280 students involved over four days, QCMF 2016 was of Olympic proportions! Outstanding performances were recorded by so many of our vocal and instrumental groups with 10 GOLD, 6 SILVER and 3 BRONZE. Special congratulations to our Guitar Ensemble and the Junior Concert Band winning Silver and Gold respectively in their debut public performances.

World renowned trumpet player and adjudicator, John Hoffman mentioned that the ATC Big Band were the most musical of the all the bands he has heard at QCMF over the years!
In typical ATC style, the success was due to a massive team effort. Thank you to our outstanding Music staff for their dedication and expertise; to the boys who were unwell on the weekend but still made a huge effort to come and perform; to the students who performed on multiple days and to our dedicated and supportive parents. There were many positive comments from other schools and the public on the behaviour, neat appearance and professional performance standards of all the Ambrose Treacy gentlemen. Congratulations to all involved.

Junior School Science Fair – Friday 19 August
Approximately 30 Junior School students have been very active in preparing their presentations for the Science Fair this Friday. The fair will run in the NJ Hall from 11.30am and classes from the rest of the school will come and visit to see the presentations. There will be prizes for the most interesting entry for each year level. Parents are welcomed to come along and see the young scientists at work.

Year 9 Mass – TOMORROW Friday 19 August 9.20am
Year 9 students are expected to wear their full formal uniform to the Mass. There will be a shared Morning Tea for parents afterwards. If all attending parents could please bring a plate, a wonderful sense of community can be established. Students will begin the day with the normal whole school assembly and then Homeroom. Following the Mass, the boys will continue with normal classes for the remainder of the day.

Elders’ Day – Monday 22 August 8.30am
Year 5 are celebrating Elders’ Day on Monday, 22 August 2016. Grandparents are invited to join us in the classrooms at 8.30am and then go for a short tour of the Junior School area with their grandsons. At 9.00am we will move to the hall for a presentation followed by morning tea.
Year 5 boys who are in any band or ensemble will need to bring their instrument to school as they will be performing on the day. Grandparents can park in the new carpark but once it is full any overflow of vehicles will be directed onto Brothers Oval (next to the tennis courts). Ground staff will be present and be able to transport anyone who wishes by mini-bus from the field to the bus shelter next to the Japanese Gardens. At the completion of morning tea the mini-buses will assist with transporting grandparents back to their cars. Please bring a plate to share for Morning Tea.

Book Week
Next week we are celebrating Book Week at ATC. The theme this year is Australia! Story Country. One of our Book Week activities is a dress up day for our Junior School boys on Wednesday 24 August. To keep in line with the book week topic the dress up theme is AUSTRALIANA. The boys can be as creative (Aussie book character, Aussie star or icon, Aussie landmark) or as simple as they like (Aussie sport star or green and gold). It would be great to see lots of our boys getting into the spirit and dressing up. The boys will be allowed to come to school in costume and stay in their costume all day if they wish. We will have a junior school assembly on Wednesday morning to celebrate Book Week and all the boys’ efforts.

Stella Fella Bow Tie Day
We are engaging with the Stella Fella Bow Tie Day as a way of becoming more aware and to advocate for those suffering from human trafficking, slavery and discrimination. Next Friday 26 August all boys are invited to replace the normal College tie with a bow tie of some sort (any colour or style). They are asked to bring in a gold coin as donation to support the campaign. Alternatively, a limited number of bow ties made by year 8 boys will be available for sale for $2. We are inviting all in the community to support the fight against modern slavery and discrimination.
