Co-curricular News Week 8

Tomorrow is a National Day of Awareness of bullying and violence. To show our support for this initiative all students are encouraged to wear either orange or green clothes. At second break we hold the first event of the 2017 Charter Cup, the Staff vs Students year long sporting challenge. With Gaelic Football as our first event it promises to be a great opportunity to build relationships, have a bit of fun and hopefully keep all aging hamstrings intact! Best of luck to all involved tomorrow!

Drop off and Pick Up
With an increase in activity around the College due to the start of the winter football and cross country codes it has never been more important for us to ensure that our boys are safe. To ensure the safety of everyone in our community, please use the Central road and Twigg Street drop off/pick up areas only. In particular, for gym, cross country and music rehearsals in the morning, boys are to be dropped in the new Central road drop off area. Boys can walk up the stairs to the hall or to the gym. We ask that boys are not dropped near the pedestrian crossing on the hill between the pool and hall. This is a NO ACCESS zone for cars except for students with a disability who require the designated zone. We would rather boys be 1 or 2 minutes late by walking the 50m up the stairs than have somebody injured by a vehicle. There are signs reminding you to only use the designated College drop off zones. Thank you in advance for supporting our road safety initiative.

Co-curricular Sport

We were very pleased with our boys performance in the pool and were pleasantly surprised with the increase in standard across the board from the other schools. After languishing in in second place after lunch, our swimmers kicked in to top gear and came home like champions to once again claim the overall championship. Congratulations to swim captains Tom Kearney and Dan Woodrow and all of our swimmers for a great season! Thanks to Mr Paul Jones and the pool staff for a great preparation and support in the lead up to the event.

Term 2 Timetable
Beginning Monday 20 March we will be operating on our Term 2 timetable. An update has been placed on the app and training for AFL, Football, Rugby and Cross Country will be in full swing as of this date. Please adjust your calendars to reflect the new training times. Follow the links below to download the timetables.

Co-curricular Music

On Sunday our handbell ensembles attended the Bellatutti Youth Handbell Festival. The boys enjoyed various workshops and massed ringing which culminated in a performance concert at the end of the day. The next opportunity to hear and see our Handbell ensembles perform is at the Autumn Music Concert. Congratulations to the Junior Band on their rehearsal on Tuesday and to Phil Gerridzen for his performance on Assembly last Friday with Mr Bolt. Musicians will demonstrate their skills at our Autumn Concert on Thursday 30 March at 6.30 pm. Tomorrow the ATC Jazz Orchestra will entertain us on Assembly and all parents are welcome to join us in the hall at 8.25am.

Activities and Clubs

Working with clay in Term 1.

This term the energetic boys involved in Art Club have been exploring clay. Monica Willoughby, Art Club Coordinator said they have experimented with the hand building techniques of pinching, coiling and slab building to create a collection of pots. Students added texture using a range of tools, coloured underglaze and gloss glazes to enhance their unique three dimensional forms. Students have had an enjoyable experience this term and look forward to their work being fired in the kiln in preparation for an exhibition. If you would like information regarding Term 2 Art Club please email Monica Willoughby.

Environmental Club and Gardening Club
As of next week, both clubs will join forces to take on our environmental and gardening projects around the College.
Each Monday and Friday mornings, boys will meet at the vegetable garden beside the pool at 7.30am. On Wednesday mornings, boys will all meet in 5 Nolan at 7.30am. Both Gwenda Burton and Bernard Wong will share the coordinators role and can be contacted via email if you have any queries.

Year 5 Public Speaking and Year 6 Debating
This year we have reorganized the Debating and Public Speaking season for our Junior School boys. We have the opportunity for six Year 5 boys to participate in Public Speaking and two teams of Year 6 boys to participate in Debating. St Laurence’s College, Marist College Ashgrove and ATC will meet on three Tuesday nights in Term 2 at St Laurence’s College to conduct these fixtures. More specific details are available on the app.
