BUSY - Building Up Strength in Youth

Not surprisingly, many of our stories at the College begin with the 4 letter word BUSY! And it’s no different in the ATC Sports Program with a number of our sports starting their competitive season and many of our boys achieving individual success.

Student Achievements

Following on from an extremely successful 2017/18 Triathlon season, Mitch Densley has been selected in the Queensland Under 16 triathlon team for the upcoming season. Congratulations to Mitch on this achievement and it is great to see his dedication to training and hard work paying off. We look forward to seeing more great results in the season.

State Cross Country

ATC recently had five students attend the State Cross Country Championships in Maroochydore. All five boys achieved outstanding results in their respective events with three of our students gaining selection into the Queensland team to race at the National Cross Country Championships in Maleny. Congratulations to Cooper Beachy-Head, Seb McCormack and Cooper Johnson on their selection in the Queensland team, it is thoroughly deserved. A big congratulations also goes to Tim Geers and Leigh Vesey who were also outstanding performers at the State Championships. Good luck to the boys at Nationals!

State Basketball Championships

Over the weekend Josh Lane represented Met West at the State Basketball Championships down the coast. Prior to the carnival, Josh was named captain of the Met West team and led them to a top four finish which is an impressive result. Well done to Josh on his continued development as a leader and it is great to see him getting recognition for his work.

Northern Eagles Track and Field Championships

Throughout week two of this term, ATC sent a large team of boys to the Northern Eagles Track and Field Championships to compete for district selection. There were a number of outstanding results throughout the day, with eighteen of our students being selected in the Northern Eagles Team to attend the Met West Carnival. We had over fifteen boys place in the top three in their events. Boys who were selected into the Northern Eagles team have been notified via email, and we wish everyone the best of luck heading into the Met West Carnival.

Congratulations to the boys who won their event of the day:

• Cooper Johnson – 400m & 800m
• Cooper Beachy-Head – 800m & 1500m
• Seb McCormack – 1500m
• Rob Stringer – 1500m

QCIS Track & Field

The QCIS Track & Field Championships are being held on Monday 13 August at UQ Athletics Track. Following on from the House Championships, Age Championships and training, we have finalised a team of 60 boys that will represent the college as we strive to take out the last of the big three QCIS carnivals for the year. Information has been emailed directly to those boys selected and we are looking forward to seeing all the students compete on Monday.

College Athletics Captains

We are also proud to announce our three athletics captains for the season, with one coming from each school. Congratulations to (l-r) Finn Lentz (Senior School) Charlie Neumann (Middle School) and Luke Rivalland (Junior School) on being named our QCIS Athletics Captains for 2018.

ATC Basketball

It has been another blistering start to the ATC Basketball season, with all three streams, club, house and Junior performing at a high level so early in the season. Our club teams have completed their grading stages and will now commence the championship portion of their season, boys will need to be registered prior to this weekend’s games and this information will be sent to relevant parents. Our House Competition has started with great success as the boys are enjoying competing amongst their peers to prove who is the strongest basketball house. A big thank you to our Year 10 & 11 students who have been coaching, refereeing and scoring to make this competition possible. Lastly, we have seen continued improvement amongst our boys in the Junior school. With many boys getting their first taste of competitive basketball we are really pleased to see the way they are competing and improving on a weekly basis. I am looking forward to seeing how the boys continue to progress throughout the season.

ATC Tennis

Success has been the major theme of our tennis season to date, with both our Junior and Middle/Senior School students achieving great success. Throughout two rounds, our 5A & 5B teams are undefeated while our 6B team had a great win on the weekend against Padua. The boys will face Villanova College this Saturday at Morningside and we are looking forward to the boys continuing their great form. Students from the Middle and Senior school recently travelled to Toowoomba for the QCIS Tennis Championship with positive results all round. Our boys were able to take out both the Intermediate and Senior titles for the day with some of our younger boys really stepping up against much older opponents. Boys in the Middle and Senior school will be able to compete this Saturday for the ATC Open Championships with the winner being crowned at the ATC Night of Excellence.
